Preparing for Walks
Tips to help you prepare for the walks

We want you to get out there and enjoy this great programme but stay safe and comfortable whilst you do, so here are our tips.

Please follow the Countryside Code. South Devon is full of stunning coast and countryside. Plan ahead and follow signs, look after plants and animals, leave gates and property as you find them, and consider other’s who will walk the route behind you, take your litter home!

Please pay careful attention to the walks descriptions, including what to bring with you and any restrictions.

Leave plenty of time to get to your walks, and if travelling by car find a parking space. Out of consideration for those who do arrive in good time walks will leave on time.

Any refreshments suggested in the programme are optional, and the cost of these elements are only included in the price of the walk where expressly stated. Together with ferries etc, these costs should be paid by you direct to the provider.

Make sure you remember to:
  • Wear stout footwear. We recommend walking boots with ankle support and good grips, particularly on long walks (remember to wear in any new boots before taking a long walk!).
  • Dress for the weather and walk location. It’s a good idea to carry wind and waterproof clothing; you never know when the weather will turn and some walk locations are particularly exposed.
  • Carry plenty of water, even on a dull day you will need a drink.
  • Carry a hat and sunscreen. Cool coastal breezes can be deceptive. The sun can burn even if the temperature doesn’t feel hot, take care of your skin and prevent sunstoke!
  • Make sure you carry any important medication, e.g. insulin, and please tell the walk leader of any relevant medical issues.
  • Carry your mobile phone and program it with your ICE (In Case of Emergency) number so that the walk leader can contact the right person in case of an emergency.
  • Carry a blister kit. This can make a long walk more comfortable if you get rubbed up the wrong way!
  • Bring your binoculars if you have them, you’ll see even more!
  • Bring your ticket!!!

Please note that on some walks toilets will not be available. Leaders will make time for comfort stops.

Whilst every effort has been made to ensure the contents of the Festival programme and this website are accurate, no responsibility is accepted for error, omission or misstatement. We encourage walkers to rely on their own judgement.
